instrumentation: horn violin Duration: 6½ minutes |
Automutilative automaton lifeDuring the rehearsals of 'this godless endeavour' with the Nieuw Ensemble, Lucas Vis aproached me with the question if I was interested in writing a piece for horn and violin. I didn't have to think twice and said I wanted to write it. John Stobart and Elisabeth Krause form this not often tried duet and they were asked to play three pieces during the celebration of the winner of a german smith association. Because of some miscommunication they thought the winner was dutch so they wanted a dutch composer. When the piece was done it turned out the winner was not dutch but from former-Yugoslavia! The piece turned out to be somewhat stubborn and even autistic in a weird way, hence the name. Just before the piece was played Hanau's mayor laudet the winner for his stubborness and his attempts to find beauty in ugliness. The look on his face told me enough about what he thought about the music; he probably expected some nice melodies. |
