This piece was originally written for clarinet quartet and an investigation into harmony. The new version contrasts highly with the old one that is much more homogenous in timbre. In the more active parts a sort of seat-swapping-dance takes place: material for four instruments is shared by five.
I used to think that the Cosmic microwave background radiation was around four degrees Kelvin but then I found out it was even a bit lower (of course it used to be four degrees at some time). So now the four degrees seem to point to the boiling point of helium. That's nice too.
