'Melody, notes, five' for String Quartet (2007) has been selected to ISCM World New Music Days in 2010. The 2010 ISCM World New Music Days runs from 30 April to 9 May 2010 in Sydney, Australia. This piece will be performed on 07.May 2010 ABC Center, in Sydney performed by Sydney Symphony fellows.
PIN was performed by Leonard Kwon, Bora Noo and Peter Beijersbergen van Henegouwen. The piece was premiered 10.June 2009 at Koningklijk Conservatoire in Den Haag
In this piece 'PIN' the objective is to find the secret codes in the music. The melody variation is hidden by the chords and those chords are always shared by three instruments. The same melody lines are located in a different background. The whole structure is beginning from the largest range moving to the smallest range gradually. The piece is written for Double Bass player 'Bora Noo', specially for her exam concert in June 2009.
In Deventer Bergkerk, Jan.03.2009, Slagwerkgroep Den Haag performed a new piece of mine called ‘rOw Row roW’ for percussion quartet. The reason for this title is simple. The idea began from the song ‘row row row your boat’ for canon singing. The piece is all about round, rotation, circle, swirling, catching-up the end of tails. I’ve been thinking about round in music in terms of spatialization against to putting in a square box. The theatrical, visual effect is as important as musical materials, however it won’t come out without my previous percussion solo pieces (‘rolling stones’ and ‘a little jumping being’).
The entire program ‘Peking Express’ will be performed on 23.Jan.2009 in Utrecht Kikker theatre, on Feb.11.2009 in Felix Meritis and May.17.2009 in de Link Tilburg.
A piece ‘a_ae_i_o_u’ which I composed for Orchestra Ereprijs with three singers was performed in the Gaudeamus International Music Week 2008. That was honorable evening to me because the ensemble played my work with the three winners of the Apeldoorn Young Composers’ meeting. The conductor said that the ensemble wanted to play this piece again because they like it very much. It sounded more strong and powerfull in Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ.
In Massachusetts, MassMoCa there were eight young residency composers and thirty musicians with David Lang, Julia Wolfe and Michael Gordon for three weeks. Musicians and composers learned to play Gamelan music every morning and I had a great time in Museum MassMoca. I especially enjoyed the concerts of Todd Reynolds (violin) and Evan Ziporyn (bass clarinet) with 1 minute pieces by 8 composers. For them I composed a duo piece ‘foot foot’. The commissioned piece ‘a-bout II’ was performed by the Bang on a Can ensemble in a gallery.
My first music for dance ‘melody, notes, six’ was commissioned by theatre Regentes. I worked with costume designer Sara Vrugt without any choreographer. It would be hard making a premiere performance without me and without director. But, it was successful thanks to the help of Ezequiel Menalled (conductor). It was performed again four times in Sept.2008 for Open Dag theatre Regentes. It was a good experience for me to work cooperative with dancers.
After the great experience in Ostrava I decided to go to Apeldoorn Young Composers’ meeting with the Ereprijs orchestra. The sixteen residency composers were coached by the composers Louis Andriessen, Martijn Padding, Richard Ayres, David Dramm, Michael Daughrathy, Rodney and Rozalie Hirs. I was glad with the performance of the orchestra Erepijs and it was wonderfull to meet and talk with the other composers.
On 12.Nov.2007 I had a concert with only pieces by myself. It took me three months of preparation to do a whole evening concert but it was worth all effort. It wouldn’t have happened without my friends’ help. There were about a hundred people in the audience that attended the concert in Schoenbergzaal KC. Three of the five works were premiered and the other two were my favorite solo pieces. ‘Water is leaking from pipes.’ for percussion quartet turned out more beautifully than I thought. ‘a-bout’ for Trombone and ensemble was also successful as well as the string quartet ‘melody, notes, five’. Finally, I finished my master degree at Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag in dec.2007.
‘SandWind’ was performed for the second time in Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ during the Gaudeamus music week 2007. Originally it was composed for the Asko ensemble for the 7x7 composition project at the Royal conservatoire and it was premiered in Paradiso Amsterdam in April 2007.
Every two years there is big new music festival in the Czech Republic Ostrava and this time I went there as a residency composer. Ostrava Bands played one of my works ‘SandWind’ for a non-official concert. I rather enjoyed the lessons, lectures and concerts with Alvin Lucier, Christian Wolfe, Peter Kotik, Phil Niblock and more composers. The quality of musicians was extremely high and the residency composers were all great. I had the most great summer time in Europe with Czech beers.
